Medical Ethics

The Doctor-Patient Relationship is a specially privileged relationship that affords physicians access to information and confidences by patients that are not available to anyone else. Along with this privilege comes a series of professional responsibilities, since more is expected of physicians than from most other professionals in our society.  The practice of medicine is governed by important ethical precepts, including confidentiality, beneficence, respect for patient autonomy, honesty, and the highest degree of professionalism. Physicians work within the guidelines of these principles. Yet, medical practice can also be challenged by these principles, particularly when two or more are in conflict.  This intensive course, liberally employing case presentations, focuses on applied ethics, including boundary issues.
