2023 Collaborative and Supervisory Practice: Different Roles, Mutual Responsibilities
Presented by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners

Who Should Attend
This course is for physicians, certified registered nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants in a collaborative practice agreement or registration agreement as well as those interested in developing a collaborative practice agreement.

For collaborating and supervising physicians: This course meets the Alabama Board of Medical Examiner's requirement that all physicians, effective January 1, 2024, have obtained continuing medical education prescribed by the Board of Medical Examiners regarding the rules and statutes governing collaborative practice in Alabama, not more than forty-eight (48) months prior to or within twelve (12) months of commencement of the collaborative or supervisory practice and every forty-eight (48) months following commencement of a collaborative or supervisory practice.

Statement of Need
Agreements between Physicians and Advanced Practice Practitioners are based on rules of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners which were recently amended with changes being effective June 14, 2021. The new rules contain continuing medical education (CME) requirements for both collaborating physicians and CRNPs/CNMs/PAs for initial and renewal applications.  It is critical that affected providers be very familiar with current rules in order to comply with Board regulations. This activity will not only review the rules, but also focus on strategies to implement them in important areas such as conducting the required quality assurance reviews.

Participant Learning Objectives
After attending this course, participants will be able to:
List the eligibility requirements for physicians to become collaborating, supervising or covering physicians.
Summarize the application process for collaborative and supervisory practice including eligibility requirements.
Identify common problems seen in a collaborative or supervisory practice and methodologies to correct them.
State the responsibilities of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and physician assistants who are in a collaborative or supervisory practice agreement.
Describe regulations for prescribing drugs, participating in a quality assurance review and practicing in various practice settings, including remote sites.
Describe the impact of effective nurse-physician collaboration.
